Covering an area of 90,340 square kilometres (5.2% of the state), the region is the fourth fastest growing in Australia and boasts around 8.4% of Australia's total exports. As of 2007, the net value of projects underway or planned for the region is a staggering 11.7 billion dollars.

With an estimated population of 152,000, projected population figures indicate a growth of around 37% to the year 2026 (an additional 57,000 people). Approximately 55% of the region's population resides within the Mackay City Council boundary.
Accounting for 70 per cent of the State's coal exports, coal mining continues to be the largest catalyst for growth in the Mackay and Bowen Basin region.
The extensive transport infrastructure boasts seamless integration of national road and rail networks (four in total including three freight systems). In addition, Australia's most modern passenger train - Queensland Rail's popular Tilt Train, provides regular service to Brisbane and Cairns.
